Nearby, another resort called the House of Refuge was also built, but it was much further away from Edgewater. On a map, these two resorts looked similar, and so they eventually became combined into one area known as Orlando.
As a fun fact, the House of Refuge is still standing, and you can visit it in Orlando. It looks very old, but it is actually only about 50 years old.

A Trip Through Old and New Florida

Still, it is home to one of Florida’s oldest cities, St. Augustine. The City has a truly unique history, as it was the first permanent European colony in the USA. The Spanish arrived in 1513 and built Fort Castillo de San Marcos on the present site of downtown St. Augustine. The settlement was named for King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabel I of Castile and was established by Pedro de Menendez de Aviles.
There are also many other historical attractions in St. Augustine, including several forts, Flagler College and the Lightner Museum. The Lightner Museum houses a collection of art from around the world and from many different time periods. It is truly a sight to see. In addition, the Spanish Governor’s Palace, built in the 1600s, is also still standing today.
Adjacent to the museum are historic homes and buildings, belonging to the famous Army Medical Museum. The museum is home to over 200 rare pieces of medical equipment, including an 18th century dentist’s chair and a variety of surgical instruments. The museum also has a large collection of fossils, geodes and crystals. If you are planning on visiting St. Augustine, be sure to check out this museum.
