The Definitive Guide to 7th & Kidder Street

The tradition began in 1968, when residents from the neighborhood surrounding 7th & Kidder Streets began getting together to share in the powerful spirit of Christmas. Just as it has for the past 45 years, this event is about gathering around a new and different Christmas tree that stands above all others, lighting it up and sharing a timeless message of hope and love.
Our uniquely decorated tree is a favorite with residents and visitors alike. Children especially enjoy the wonder of the lights and decorations that surround it. In keeping with the theme of Christmas this year, our tree will be lit with Smokey Bear and seven of his fellow woodland creatures.

Why the 7th and Kidder St. Neighborhood Is Unique & Diverse

Welcome to the 7th and Kidder Street Neighbors. We are a diverse neighborhood located in Wilmington, NC. Our history dates back to 1968 when the first Christmas tree lighting was held at the local park. Since then, we take our traditions very seriously. In order to ensure the continuation of our family-friendly atmosphere, we hold two events each year: a street tree lighting, and the community Christmas dinner. This tradition has been going on for 45 years.
December 2013 marks the 45th annual community Christmas dinner. Although we had to cancel the street tree lighting due to weather, we will still be having a community Christmas dinner on Saturday December 14th from 11:30am-1:30pm at Chesapeake Club on Kilder Street. The menu for the day will be traditional turkey and all the trimmings served family style just like the food in olden days. We are inviting all neighbors, friends, and families from around the area to join us.

The Definitive Guide to 7th And Kidder Street

Almost 15 years ago, after the passing of long-time residents, the people living in 7th and Kidder Streets decided to create a book that would tell our story and serve as a document of this special place. This book was written by Kendall Smith, who spent countless hours documenting and interviewing the local residents of this diverse neighborhood. I have been collecting stories from the 7th and Kidder Street neighbors before they pass away. This is truly a labor of love. We are so grateful to the people who sat down with us and shared their stories. The following is a brief summary of some of the chapters in this book.
“7th and Kidder Street: From The Beginning (1901-1936)”
In the beginning, this neighborhood was filled with families that lived and owned their own businesses. There was little crime here, a reflection of the good character of many of our neighbors. There were drug addicts at times, but they were tucked away behind big walls and gates. Occasionally they would be lynched or attacked by gangs outside the neighborhood. But for the most part, the families here looked after each other and their neighbors. Many people who live in other areas of Wilmington think of us as being “isolated.” However, my perception of this area is that it was a warm and caring neighborhood where people left their doors unlocked and felt safe when they went to bed at night.
