The Tail of the Dragon is a scenic six-mile long winding mountain road that winds through mountains and valleys in North Carolina. While many people are familiar with the famous Devils Backbone Mountain Road, no one seems to know that there is another road that goes up and over the same mountain into Pennsylvania, just north of Virginia. The road is very narrow, winding around a mountain at times, and sometimes dropping down into deep canyons full of thick forests. It’s a very scenic place and it is a favorite among motorcyclists, so don’t be surprised if you are pulled over for speeding, even on a motorcycle.
But the best part about visiting the Tail of the Dragon is when you get to Pennsylvania through Tennessee Valley, and you find yourself driving up steep switchbacks that lead directly up to a huge waterfall. At the top of these steep roads are beautiful mountain vistas where it feels as if you are driving on air. It can take a while to get to the top in some spots, and there are lots of sharp curves and turns that keep you on your toes.
No wonder it’s nicknamed the Dragon!
