How to Navigate the Utah/Rawlins Wy and Salt Lake City Area Part 1

Blog outline:

Rawlins Wy is a National Scenic Byway that features stunning views of the Rocky Mountains, large and small, as it traverses all four mountain states. The entire Rawlins Wy travels through Colorado, Utah, Nevada and Wyoming.
The Rawlins Wy is named after General John W. Rawlins, who served in both the Mexican and Indian Wars. He was a resident of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where the road passes through.
The idea of a scenic byway linking all four states was first suggested by Oregon’s Senator Wayne Morse in 1974. The Federal Highway Administration authorized funding for the scenic byway in 1981 and started construction in 1983.
The Rawlins Wy can be driven in any direction, although it is generally advised to start in the middle of Utah and travel east to Wyoming.

Introduction-What is the Utah/Rawlins Wy and Salt Lake City Area?

Today, the Rawlins Wy is a major scenic travel route that meanders through both mountains and valleys. There are numerous small towns along the way, some of which have fascinating stories to tell. Salina, for example, was the first permanent settlement in central Utah and the historic home of Heber C. Kimball. The nearby town of Nephi is home to an international art festival each July that is renowned as one of the most beautiful art festivals in America.
There’s a lot more to talk about with this highway than just scenery, however. It has played a pivotal role in many aspects of Utah history for over a century-and-a-half. The Rawlins Wy was even the setting of the last section of the Pony Express and of the famous Black Hawk incident.
Those who have traveled this road have found it to be a unique experience, and have often wondered what lies ahead on their journey. For those who are fortunate enough to visit, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that they will never forget.
