The Story: Native Americans once inhabited this area. One in particular, Chief Minkom, built a structure out of branches and mud. Goerke also held several civic positions on Staten Island. He was among chief of police, borough president, and city councilman. Daniel Goerke’s wife Florence built this extraordinarily beautiful waterfront house. The house was used as a summer cottage and it served as a rental property until 1955.
