The story of the Morgan family, who buys a beautiful farm in Morris County, New Jersey during the Great Depression. The Morgans replace their old musty farmhouse with a gleaming new home. One day in 1944, their daughter has an idea for them to create a real Christmas for their seven grandchildren by inviting all the children on their street to join them for a big party on Christmas Eve. The backyard is transformed into an enchanted kingdom where fairies and elves arrive carrying gifts of toys and candies. The evening is magical as the children spin yarns and make up games. After the party, the Morgans park their children’s sleigh in their barn, to be ready for many more family winters to come.
“Morris County” is the second book in a series, the first being “The Christmas Sleigh”. The book is illustrated and was published by Simon & Schuster in 1976. It was written by Barbara Robinson.
The story is a timeless one that has been told in many forms over the years. The motif of families gathering together at Christmas time and inviting friends to share their traditions and customs, has been found in Christmas stories going back as far as Dickens.
“Morris County 501 W. Main Grove Council Grove KS 66846” is a book written by Michael Aversa and published by Xlibris Corporation in 2010, covering the history of Morris County, New Jersey and its municipalities such as Asbury Park, Tuckerton and Freehold. The book combines photographs with maps of the county and provides background information on the history, people (funeral homes get an under-line), industries (tax revenue goes toward paying for services), schools (which have provided us with our favorite public parking lots) , events that happened before 1900..which made it very interesting reading I will highlight only the interesting parts where I think they are important to know. And one more thing – this would be a great book for any kind of family members – it’s easy to
The book is divided into two parts. The first part opens with the Morgan family in present time, who have been living on this farm for a long time. During the Great Depression their old house has gone into disrepair and they need to move to another place. They then buy a beautiful farm in Morris County, New Jersey. Here they replace the old musty farmhouse with a gleaming new home. One day in 1944, their daughter has an idea for them to create a real Christmas for their seven grandchildren by inviting all the neighbors to come over and have a real Christmas dinner. This is the start of their Christmas tradition in Morris County.
The first chapter that I read got me so interested and it made me feel like I am right there looking at the farmhouse with all my family members saying “wow, this is great!” It just made me feel so excited which I appreciated because I haven’t had such a feeling in a while. Then I read the second chapter and it was as interesting as the first one. This is what I like most: historical facts that are not mentioned much in history books. That is why this book was so great to read. There are many things that I never knew before, that now make me feel more connected to my family history.
In this first part of the book, lets talk about the original farmhouse belonging to Morgan’s family. It got fixed up by a Joseph Bowers back in 1885. The Bowers family was really wealthy and owning a lot of property around Asbury Park. Joseph was a sea merchant and shipbuilder in Atlantic City for a long time. He moved to Freehold, New Jersey and bought the old farmhouse. He converted the old house into a beautiful Victorian style mansion surrounded by two ponds and has been in his family’s possession ever since.
