How the Girl Behind the Raisin Bran Commercial Made Her Career as a Model, Actress & Public Figure

In 1954, a photographer from Ebony magazine took a picture of little black girl named Diana Dorsett. In 1970, the now grown up Dorsett legally changed her name to Naomi Sims. She began modeling at the age of 15 and opened her own modeling agency at 18. By age 21, she became a public figure and activist by throwing the first Black Fashion Show. She helped design the outfits for popular television shows at the time including “Mama” and “Good Times” and starred in many commercials.
She was born in 1940 and grew up in Harlem, New York City. Her father, a cotton broker by day, was extremely strict and by the time she was 3 years old she would not say a word to him. Dorsett went on to state that her childhood consisted of spending time at her aunt’s salon in Harlem where she would receive private lessons from the owner once a week. Dorsett picked up hairstyling and had her own business by age 13. Dorsett attended the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City but left after a year because she wanted to become a model.

As she grew older, Naomi’s career as a model and public figure rose rapidly. She announced that she would be the first African American designer to go head to head with the fashion industry in a battle for power. The Ebony Fashion Show was her way of testing her abilities. But it was also an opportunity for her to make a name for herself in the fashion world, which she did by becoming the first black woman to have a fashion show full of African-American designs.
That was the beginning of her career as a public figure. She spoke out against racism and for equal rights for blacks. She was one of the first African Americans to tell her story to the public in hopes to help make a change in their world. Naomi is known for being successful in everything she has ever done, from model to television star to director, and she started out at a very young age.
Naomi started her memory book early, starting when she was 5 years old. Her mom was a photographer, and Naomi often helped her in the dark room. I wonder what the photo album looked like with those photos of Naomi
