Why did the clinic open in Chicago?

There is a social need for the Chicago New Approach Clinic because many LGBT people who are living with HIV in the United States face barriers when they seek quality medical care. Research shows that gay men and bisexual men are at high risk for HIV infection, yet they are often hesitant to disclose their sexual orientation when they seek health care. These barriers include the fear that a health care provider will reject them or discriminate against them. The Chicago New Approach Clinic was founded in 1992 to serve the needs of this vulnerable population. We are the only HIV clinic in Illinois that offers all types of primary care services for gay men living with HIV.

Jessica Fernandez’s Story of an Unthinkable Journey that Taught Her She Can’t Take Her Health For Granted – Part 1

A woman diagnosed with HIV can face many challenges. The biggest is the stigma and discrimination attached to the disease. Jessica Fernandez recounted her struggle after her diagnosis in a first-person essay that was published in the Chicago New Approach blog, titled “A Journey Unthought Of.” The 31 year-old said she had been living with HIV for nearly 2 years before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In addition to being diagnosed with cancer, Fernandez also had to deal with the massive side effects of taking antiretrovirals (ARVs). She wrote about how the side effects, which included severe abdominal pain, caused her to lose so much weight that her face shrunk and “the back of my thighs looked like they had been hit with a belt sander.”
Fernandez said she went through five rounds of chemotherapy and several surgeries. She also had to go on “dunner pills” to prevent her body from rejecting the donated breast she received. The pill triggered nausea, headaches, dizziness and pain that Fernandez described as “crushing.” She said that it felt like someone was continually crushing her chest while simultaneously punching her in the stomach.
