The Rise in Cholo Culture and How to Dress Like a Cholo

Introduction: What is Cholo Style?

Cholo style is the traditional dress code of low-rider or cholo culture, which affiliates both men and women with their respective gangs. While it is primarily a Central American fashion, cholo styles have gained popularity in urban areas of the United States. This dress code can be seen in Mexican-American culture and the Hispanic subculture. The cholo style consists of baggy or “poorly washed” denim jeans, as well as long-sleeved shirts and bandanas worn on the head.
Cholo style has been incorporated into American popular culture and many hip-hop artists have worn the cholo style. It is also a style that many Cholas, who are primarily of Mexican descent, adopt as a fashionable alternative to traditional Mexican clothing. This split between the Cholas and other Hispanics was further reinforced in films such as “The Wild One”. “The Wild One” (1953) was the first film depicting a Chicano as a gang member. The film was not only influential in its portrayal of the Cholo, it also became an icon for future films with similar themes.
Cholo fashion has become more famous in recent years. Popular cholos include Stevie Wonder, Roberta Flack, Jennifer Lopez, and the Wu Tang Clan. Many other artists have worn cholo style popularized by hip-hop artists throughout the USA.

What are the different ways to dress like a cholo?

What are ways to dress like a cholo? Well, the first way is to wear long-sleeved shirts. The color of the shirt should be black, maroon, or dark red. Some cholos use graphic T-shirts or bandanas instead. Other shirts may contain cuss words or phrases of gang affiliation. “Cholo style” has become a unique fashion style to the United States because of current gang issues and the ability to express oneself. Today, there are many people who do not understand cholo culture and wear “gang attire.” People who do not understand cholo style are either from gangs or related with gangs in some way. For example, if a person wears bandanas on their head but does not know what a cholo is, he or she would probably be considered to be in the gang life.

How does one incorporate a sombrero into their outfit without looking too out of place on the streets?

One can incorporate a sombrero into their outfit in many ways. Wearing a sombrero with cholo fashion is not strange at all because it represents an old Mexican tradition. What may look out of place on the streets is when someone dresses up like a charro and wears high-heeled boots, but this is simply an expression that in no way affects their gang affiliation. As long as one is not involved with the gang and doesn’t pose a threat to their rival gangs, wearing high-heeled boots should be allowed.
Another form of sombrero is the typical mariachi hat. This pattern can be used in many ways to show support for any gang or organization that one may like. If one wears this style of sombrero it represents that they have an affiliation with another gang, like cholos do with wearing sombreros as a symbol of their gang affiliation.

What are some of the ethical concerns that have arisen with regard to dressing like a cholo?

There are some ethical concerns that have arisen with dressing like a cholo. Supposedly, the concern is about discrimination and stereotyping. If a person wears “gang attire” and attends school, the school would be in violation of the Equal Protection Act of 1972. This act states that racism and discrimination are illegal acts and that anyone can be discriminated against for any reason. Another big concern about dressing like a cholo is that in some cases, people of the opposite race are considered to be affiliated with the gang and therefore fair game for gang members. Also, the bandana headbands are said to have originated from the color red, which was worn by Mexican revolutionaries. Because of this, wearing a bandana on their heads is seen as a symbol of disrespect and it is not uncommon for gang members to shoot at people wearing red bandanas. These concerns have caused some changes in the community.
The alleged discrimination has made people of the Hispanic origin to take action and stop associating themselves with gangs. The cholo look is also changing as well. Some people have been seen wearing bandanas on their heads, but then a lot of girls are seen wearing bandanas with flowers or very feminine clothing and colors that surpasses the gangsta look. These and other changes have made the community more positive overall.
