A North Carolina county near the Tennessee border is called Swain County. This county in North Carolina is on the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at an elevation of 3,080 feet. It is located 75 miles east of Knoxville, Tennessee, and 200 miles north of Atlanta. The county seat is Bryson City.
Unlike other North Carolina counties near the Tennessee border, Swain County lies in the Appalachian Mountains and is not located on any mountain ridge or by a river or creek. However, it does have a tiny portion of Pisgah National Forest that borders the county on its southwestern side.
In 1821, Swain County was created from parts of both Cherokee and Buncombe counties. The name Swain is said to have been derived from two Cherokee words meaning “a kind of large wildcat that lives among rocks. “
The county is believed to have been named after Dr. Joseph Alexander Swain. Dr. Swain was president of the University of North Carolina from 1835 to 1861 and was instrumental in establishing the university’s first department of science. He is also believed to have helped Swain County obtain a post office, since he was one of North Carolina’s senators in 1821.
